INITIAL CALL FOR ASSESSMENT

Artists are invited to submit applications for consideration to exhibit at BISCOT in June 2027

BISCOT is a Scottish-based exhibition which promotes excellence in contemporary botanical painting and illustration. It is held biennially by the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society (RCHS – The Caley) supported by the Scottish Society of Botanical Artists (SSBA).  It is open to both national and international artists and presents an opportunity to exhibit new and original botanical artwork in Edinburgh, Scotland.

VENUE – The McHattie Room, The Courtyard, Saughton Park Gardens, Edinburgh EH11 3HR.

BISCOT is competitive and certificates are awarded in Gold, Silver-gilt, Silver and Bronze categories. The unique Mary Mendum Medal may also be awarded for an exhibit of exceptional quality.

N.B. In order to exhibit at BISCOT artists must be approved by the BISCOT assessment panel.

ELIGIBILITY The following artists who are automatically eligible:

  • Have previously been accepted to exhibit with BISCOT
  • Have exhibited at the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) and gained Gold or Silver-gilt awards,
  • Are graduates who have gained a Diploma with Distinction from the following organisations: The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) Botanical Illustration Course; the Society of Botanical Artists (SBA); Chelsea Physic Garden; the Irish Society of Botanical Artists (ISBA), and equivalent international organisations.

NEW EXHIBITORS and ARTISTS not resident in the U.K: ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE

  • Artists who do not fall into the categories listed above, i.e. who are not eligible to exhibit at BISCOT, must submit 4 (four) examples of their work for approval by the assessment panel.  Please refer to the RULES-REGULATIONS-FOR-BISCOT-2027 for submission details
  • Images should be jpg / png,  We recommend images with dimensions of: Longest side: 2000–3000 px | Shortest side: 1200–2000 px. This should be reflected in the file size of 2–8 MB per image
  • Artists who pass the assessment will be kept on the Eligible Register for 6 years. An artist who does not exhibit at BISCOT within this period may be asked to resubmit for assessment.

EXHIBITION REQUIREMENTS.

Each artist must exhibit 4 (four) original themed works supported by a written piece (max 500 words) regarding your choice of theme; also further illustrative graphic details, (line drawings, cross-sections, dissections ), showing the artist’s exploration of the botanical science behind the art.  The written piece will be displayed as part of your exhibit while the other research material will be displayed digitally/on screen in the Exhibition Hall to allow visitors to understand the observational study and scientific diligence which has preceded the production of the artworks.
